I began my journalism career in 1989 as a reporter for the Grand Falls Advertiser, in central Newfoundland. I worked as an editor and restaurant critic for Halifax's Chronicle Herald, then moved to Ottawa in 2004 to cover federal politics. In 2011 I moved to Postmedia News, where I worked as an investigative journalist and columnist. In 2016 I attended Harvard University as a Nieman fellow. I am a contributing editor at Maclean's Magazine, a contributing author for the Centre for International Governance Innovation, and write for other newspapers and magazines. I have a special interest in public interest journalism - political corruption, history, human rights and misinformation - and have specialized in working carefully with sources. I have won the Michener Award, a National Newspaper Award, Canadian Association of Journalists Award, the Canadian Hillman Prize and an Atlantic Journalism Award. I feel happy and lucky to do such interesting work, which I hope helps make the world a better place.
